MONTREAL - Canada is having its own anti-impotence drug this year - the first of its kind to use the same drug as Viagra.
The news comes after Pfizer's Canadian patent for the impotence drug Viagra expired in April.
The Canadian patent for impotence drugs was set to expire on July 29, but has not been renewed. Canadian drug companies have said they will start marketing the new drug after the expiry of the patent.
The new drug is called "Sildenafil" and will be sold under the name "Viagra" in Canada by a doctor.
"The Canadian patent on the drug is very important," said Dr. Robert A. Thompson, president of Pfizer Canada Inc.
"It is important for Canadians to have access to this medication."
A spokeswoman for Pfizer said they have not been "playing catch up" with the Canadian patent.
The patent expires in the year to come, but Thompson said Canadian drug companies are taking steps to make the drugs cheaper. The Canadian patent will be extended to cover Viagra.
Dr. David R. Smith, a Pfizer spokesperson, said that although the patent extension does not expire, the drug company is "working with our Canadian partners and will continue to work with them in the future."
In a statement to Health Canada, Pfizer said the Canadian patent on the impotence drug Viagra expired in April.
"Since Viagra is a prescription-only medicine and we cannot import or sell it, we have decided to temporarily close our Canadian patent and will continue to work with our Canadian partners to make the Viagra affordable to Canadians."
The Canadian patent has been renewed to cover the new drug, which is the same drug as the original, for which it was previously used.
